The Westward Ho is a definite icon in downtown Phoenix. This 16 foot building stands 208 ft to the roof. It opened for business in 1926 and was the tallest building in Arizona for over 30 years. It was open as a hotel from 1928 – 1980. To save the building from demolition it was turned into a subsidized housing complex for the elderly and mobility impaired. Today, the facility houses as many as 320 residents in 289 rooms which were recently renovated to make them more accessible for the residents.
